About

This year’s Archaeology Month theme is Community, and we’re excited to bring it to life with an event that explores the shared history of cooking and meal-making.

Hosted by the Arkansas Archaeological Survey and ARTx3, this family-friendly event will dive into ancient cooking practices, techniques, tools, and traditions, revealing how food has always been at the heart of building and sustaining communities.

Learn how ancient communities made meals using traditional tools and methods.

Connect with others by exploring the shared human experience of preparing and sharing food.

Taste native-inspired dishes and leave with knowledge about the deep roots of culinary traditions.

  1. Interactive Displays
    • Explore raw materials, tools, and artifact replicas used by ancient peoples for cooking, hunting, and gathering.
    • Learn about ancient food preparation techniques and the archaeological evidence behind them.
  2. Live Demonstrations:
    • Watch and participate in the making of Native-inspired recipes, including Hickory Nut Butter and Hickory Nut Soup
  3. Hands-On Activities:
    • Engage with cooking tools and techniques, such as grinding nuts and grains or starting a fire with ancient methods.
    • Try your hand at replicating ancient food preparation practices.
  1. Community Building through Food:
    • Discover how meal-making fosters connections by examining the social and cultural roles of food in ancient communities.

Second Saturday Family FunDay is free and open to the public.

The ARTx3 Campus' Second Saturday Family FunDay program offers monthly hands-on arts and science activities in which visitors create art, complete science projects, or perform dance, music, or theater. Activities complement current art or science exhibitions. Activities are free and led by visiting artists, local art educators, and staff.

Sponsored by The Pine Bluff Area Community Foundation, an affiliate office of the Arkansas Community Foundation, Inc.
